Auerswald’s Ringer Kunst
The topic of the weekend workshop will be Fabian von Auerswald’s wrestling manual Ringer Kunst from the year 1539. As one of the most comprehensive manuals on unarmed combat of the era it contains descriptions of 85 techniques accompanied by beautifully detailed illustrations. As such it represents the perfect entry point for HEMA practitioners wishing to start exploring historical wrestling. The workshop aims to provide the participants with both theoretical and practical understanding of Auerswald’s wrestling system so that they may continue to explore the Ringer Kunst on their own.
On the first day of the workshop we will go over the basics. We will cover proper falling technique, fundamental wrestling drills and learn Auerswald’s basic throws while familiarizing ourselves with the terminology. Second day will expand on what was learned in the first. Among the things covered will be the counters to the basic throws, combination attacks, advanced techniques and exercises to prepare us for free sparring.
Participants of all skill levels are welcome, no special equipment is necessary only a strong desire to learn old and forgotten martial arts 🙂

TRAINER:

Gregor Medvešek has been involved in HEMA since 2005. As many others, he was first introduced to the historical martial arts by studying longsword, but as he began researching the manuals, he soon discovered his true passion – wrestling. To better understand the teachings of medieval masters, he began cross-training in other martial arts, primarily modern Greco-Roman wrestling, in which he also successfully competed, winning the 2012 Slovenian national championship in the middleweight division.
The primary focus of his interest are German wrestling texts from the 15th and 16th centuries, such as those of Talhoffer, Ott and Auerswald. He has also tried his hand at translating, producing English translations of Lignitzer’s and Ott’s treatises currently available at wiktenauer.com.
Gregor has been teaching medieval wrestling internationally since 2011 and has held workshops at major European HEMA events such as Dijon, Swordfish, Celje and Dreynevent.
